EMERALD AIRPORT: Terminal Redevelopment.

GBA Consulting Engineers (GBA) is an engineering company with over 75 years of experience that provides a vast range of specialised engineering services. In this instance, our team proudly played an integral part in the Emerald Airport Terminal Redevelopment Project. GBA assumed the role of Client’s Representative and Project Manager for the overall project as well performing Superintendent duties for the Construction Contract and Security Screening Equipment Contract. This project aligns with GBA’s mission which reflects our commitment within the community and our passionate desire to contribute to projects such as these.

Emerald Airport is owned and operated by the Central Highlands Regional Council, and it is located on the edge of outback Queensland. This airport regularly transports large numbers of passengers on flights serviced by Qantas and Virgin Australia.

The desire of improving passenger experience and enhancing user safety resulted in a need to implement a plan to redevelop the terminal. This plan included upgrades of the overall terminal. However, the terminal project was carried out simultaneously with the airport pavement upgrade project to achieve maximum efficiencies and cost savings.

Numerous benefits and heightened safety user experience were enabled from this project. The overall redevelopment project involved the enhancement of the airport user’s flow. This phase included relocating and upgrading the passenger drop-off zone and pick-up zone and carpark, formal implementation of a traffic crossing and shades structures. This upgrade enhanced safety for all airport users as well as improving accessibility for all airport users.

There was also an upgrade of the firefighting equipment and systems which positively impact building safety. This phase included the improvement of onsite hydrant water supplies, fire pumps as well as smoke and heat detection.

Screening space was increased to meet enhanced screening requirements which included the upgrade of communications and IT backbone infrastructure, CCTV systems, access and wayfinding systems which have made the airport more secure.

Revenue opportunities have also been increased as an outcome of the relocation of the food Kiosk after the screening area ensuring that passengers and visitors can access food and beverage services right up until the moment of boarding the aircraft.

The overall project was also a significant achievement for GBA. The extensive experience GBA offers, allowed the team to be involved as Project Manager of the project and contribute significantly to the overall terminal redevelopment upgrade. Detailed planning, frequent and regular project management team meetings were facilitated throughout the redevelopment resulting in a highly successful outcome for the Client.
